Immortal Technique (born 31 March 1978) is a hip hop artist and political activist. He was born Felipe Coronel in Peru. In many of his songs, he references the strife of poverty in the slums of America and he points blame at politicians and social and economic injustice. He has also expressed unwavering support for Mumia Abu-Jamal and has received support from Abu-Jamal in return, featuring him and his speeches via tapes on one of his albums. His politically based rhymes deal with the wrongdoings of the government, the media, religion, and law enforcement. Although he has been offered a deal with at least one major label, he has yet to sign with any, because of disagreements they have over the political content of his songs, as well as Immortal Technique wanting to keep control over his production. He became involved in the business end of things after realizing that in the music business, it is the record companies who are making most of the money. He is currently President of Viper Records.//Immortal Technique was born Felipe Coronel in El Hospital Militar De Lima. Only living in Peru for a few years, his family came to the United States to escape the civil war. After emigrating to New York, he attended Hunter College High School, where he is best remembered for his great rapping skill and his extracurricular involvement such as removing neighborhood graffiti. After some run-ins with the law and almost being expelled in 1996, he graduated. His college career at Pennsylvania State University ended no more gracefully, charged with assault and expelled in his second year.During his time in prison, he studied politics and began writing songs. After being paroled in 1999, he excelled at freestyle battles, winning several competitions in New York City and elsewhere. He released his first album, Revolutionary Vol. 1 in 2001. In November, 2002 he was listed by Source magazine as the month's featured "Unsigned Hype", which highlights artists that are not signed to a recording label. He released his second album Revolutionary Vol. 2 in 2004 under Viper Records label, of which he was the Executive Vice President and now is President of Operations.Immortal Technique has taken the role of an activist in much of his later work. He has collaborated with activist Mumia Abu-Jamal, and released songs commenting on the George W. Bush administration and its agenda. Songs such as "The Cause of Death" and the single "Bin Laden" express his views on terrorism and the Iraq War as well as his disdain for the current American government and structure of power
