Ultra Music Festival (UMF) is an outdoor electronic music event held annually in Miami, Florida. It is a 14 hour show that takes place across 12 different stages featuring over 200 artists, DJs and producers. The festival is part of the Winter Music Conference which occurs sometime in March. It is currently the biggest music festival of its kind in the United States (2005).Since 2000, UMF has been held outdoors in Bayfront Park, Miami. The first two UMFs in 1998 and 1999, were actually held on South Beach. UMF attendance exceeded the possible beach permits, thus, forcing the festival to adopt the venue of Bayfront Park. The top DJs and artists of the evening perform in the amphitheater designed to hold thousands of attendees. There is a second main stage (called the 'Sound stage') and 10 other specialized music areas scattered throughout the park featuring: Drum and Bass, House, Techno, Electro, Breakbeats, Trance, and other various styles of electronic music. In 2005 the concert was so popular that it sold out. So, as of 2006 the Miami event had been moved to an even bigger venue, Bicentennial Park, next door to its past home.It was also decided to make a spin-off concert in New York City's Central Park called ULTRA.NY, which also sold out.Over the years some of the world's most talented have performed at this event. Some of the performers include: The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Underworld, Paul Oakenfold, Dieselboy, Richie Hawtin, Bad Boy Bill, Carl Cox, Adam Freeland, Pete Tong, Paul Van Dyk, Technical Itch, John Digweed, Tiesto, Rabbit in the Moon, Josh Wink, DJ Icey, D:Fuse, Goldie, DJ Craze, Donald Glaude, keoki, DJ Baby Anne, Rennie Pilgrem, DJ Hyper, TeeBee, Andy C, Electric Skychurch, Luke Fair, DJ Dan, Simply Jeff, Fabio, Grooverider, DJ Dara, Junior Vasquez, Christoper Lawrence, Deep Dish, Sasha, AK1200, The Prodigy, Bad Company, Marco MC & Hamburg City Allstars, and many other various talents

Alex Ross: The Make Music festival overtakes New York.
If only I could have done it,” Charles Ives once said. “It’s all there--the mountains and the fields.” The composer was speaking of his dream project, the “Universe Symphony,” which was to have depicted nothing less than the formation, the evolution, and the future of the world, from the . . .

Whatever happened to the great American film director?
This summer, among all the anonymous blockbusters, remakes and sequels filling the multiplexes, only one American movie will open on the strength of its director – Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. Yet even as Tarantino continues to be feted – first at Cannes and soon in cinemas across the world – there's a creeping, worrisome sense that a dearth of young American directors have the ...
