The Machine, the former local chapter of Theta Nu Epsilon at the University of Alabama, is a select coalition of traditionally white fraternities and sororities designed to influence campus politics. Theta Nu Epsilon is a class-year society that was founded at Wesleyan University in 1870. 'The Machine' at Alabama is no longer formally connected to the national organization of Theta Nu Epsilon, although the name still remains. The Machine controls much of student life at the University of Alabama and has gone so far as to install members in local government so as to exercise its power in the City of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and against local businesses.//The term 'Machine' was coined by the student newspaper (The Crimson White) to describe the organization's efficiency for placing its members into the SGA and state-wide politics.According to newspaper accounts and a documentary produced by the University of Alabama, the Machine is believed to control the Student Government Association (SGA), having won all but seven races for the SGA presidency since 1914, including wins against real-world politicians such as former Florida Congressman and MSNBC commentator Joe Scarborough and former Alabama Gov. George Wallace. Wallace was twice a non-Machine candidate for Cotillion Club Chairman, the official director for large social and entertainment events on campus (now known as University Programs President).Newsweek published a web exclusive article on March 22, 2004 that said that, "At the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, an organization called Machine rules over campus politics with an iron fist. Similar in secrecy to Yale University’s Skull and Bones (a group both George Bush and John Kerry know something about), many students think the Machine selects candidates, puts the right name on the wire and essentially determines election results before a single ballot is cast.
