This week in history: rooting for the canal
1817, 192 years ago A glorious day in Rome The oxen’s ears snap to attention as John Richardson snaps his whip above their heads. They move forward slowly, pulling a plow which digs deep into the earth just outside of Rome. Construction of the longest artificial waterway in the world has begun. The 363-mile-long Erie Canal will connect the Hudson River near Albany and Lake Erie near Buffalo.

Big- and small-screen actor Karl Malden dies at 97
Karl Malden, an Academy Award-winning actor who excelled in plainspoken, working-class roles, including the awkward Mitch in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and a brave priest in "On the Waterfront," died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 97.
