Papa Roach is a four-piece nu metal / hard rock group from Vacaville, California. The band formed in 1993, and hit stardom during the "nu metal era" in 2000 with their three times platinum album Infest. They group's success continued with later releases lovehatetragedy and their most recent, Getting Away With Murder.//The early formation of Papa Roach occurred in January of 1993, where Jacoby Shaddix and Dave Buckner met on the Vacaville High School football field, where the two ended up talking about music. Later Will James (Bass) and Ben Luther (Trombone) joined Shaddix and Buckner and entered in the school's talent show. They covered Jimi Hendrix's Fire, most notably playing without a guitarist. Though they lost the contest, they vowed to improve. In March 1993, Ben Luther was replaced by guitarist Jerry Horton from nearby Vanden High School. Jerry was introduced to the band through his girlfriend, who was a fan of the band. However, Jerry was at first apprehensive about joining the band because Jacoby, Dave and Will all went to a different high school. At this point, Papa Roach were practicing everyday and touring on every gig they could get.In 1994, Papa Roach recorded their first 7 track EP titled Potatoes for Christmas. Ryan Brown stood in for drums however, because Buckner was spending the year in Seattle studying art. In 1995 they recorded a 2 track promo at Sound Farm Studios, titled Caca Bonita. With Buckner back on drums they noticed a significant improvement over the two year life of the band. Soon after this they realized they needed to make some changes; Will James had become heavily involved in a church summer camp, which would limit the band from practicing and touring over the summer. Instead they decided to bring in someone who had been with the band the whole time as a roadie, Tobin Esperance.1996 saw the production of their first full-length album, Old Friends from Young Years. Still touring heavily, they supported bands such as Incubus, Powerman 5000, Static-X and hed (pe). In 1998 they released another 5 track CD, 5 Tracks Deep. Selling over 1,000 copies in its first month, it caught the attention of Warner Brothers, who then financed the production of a 5 track promo CD including the songs, Last Resort, Broken Home and She Loves Me Not. Warner Brothers failed to sign the band, but it did not keep them from continuing on
