"Under the Bridge" is a 1991 song by popular rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers. Released on their album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the music video won an MTV Video Music Award and single-handedly propelled the band to stardom. "Under the Bridge" is an introspective reflection on Anthony Kiedis' drug habit. A particular line of the song sings 'Under the bridge downtown, is where I drew some blood' referring to an experience in which he used drugs under a bridge with a member of a Mexican gang, although Anthony himself refuses to reveal the exact location. The song nearly never made it to the album because the lyrics and nature of the song made Kiedis reluctant to show it to the then producer Rick Rubin and also to record it. It has been noticed that the bridge shown in the 'Under the Bridge' video is the same one as is shown in the 'By the Way' video. Some fans believe that the man in the taxi that took him to the bridge was portrayed as a drug dealer trying to get him back into drugs by stirring up old memories from under the bridge. The video for the song features guitarist John Frusciante playing a turquoise-colored Fender Jaguar in the desert, wearing a ski cap.It originally reached #26 in the UK, though a re-issue in 1994 reached #13. The song became a hit again in 1998, when UK girl group All Saints re-recorded it for their début album and released it as a double-a-side with their cover of Patti LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade". However the All Saints cover left out the final verse which included the only drug references in the whole song. This was possibly done to keep the "clean" image of the group. The song hit #1 in the UK Singles Chart. In 2006, Australian act The Saturday Club created a chopped and screwed remix of "Under The Bridge" for the mp3 blog Screw Rock 'n' Roll. The guitar of this song is played in a distinctive style, similar to that of Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing. The church choir of guitarist John Frusciante's mother does the background singing in the song's coda.Hip-hop artist Mos Def used the first eight lines of this song for the intro of his song Brookyln, changing the line "City of Angels" to "Is beautiful Brooklyn.
