Asheville Aces were a minor-league professional ice hockey team based in Asheville, North Carolina. They were a member of the SPHL, and played their home games at the Asheville Civic Center. In the off-season before the Aces came to town, Asheville was a minor league hockey battle ground. David Waronker representing the SPHL and John Cherney representing the SEHL battled to claim the city for the respective leagues. This battle cause the city to be weary of the league as both were somewhat unstable. The city insisted the Asheville team, whichever league it was in, must compete in a six team league. The SPHL at that time had 4 teams in Huntsville, AL, Birmingham (Pelham), AL, Tupelo, MS, and Fayetteville, NC. The SPHL had teams in Jacksonville, FL, Orlando, FL and Macon, GA. They promised the had more expansion teams just waiting to be announced until the 6th team came aboard. That was some what true. After the SEHL realized it was going to lose Asheville, the Huntsville Channle Cats and the Winston-Salem T-Birds both folded. The SPHL quickly moved into both of these markets with the Huntsville Havoc and gave Winston-Salem its third team in 2 and a half seasons, the Winston-Salem Polar Twins. The Knoxville Ice Bears and the Cape Fear Fireantz, who changed their name to the Fayetteville Fireantz, jumped ship to the SPHL.Orlando's lease was revoked before the start of the season but this still left the SPHL with 7 other teams not including Asheville. The Aces would only play one season because this war and raised their rent costs sky high
