Don Carlos is an opera in five acts by Giuseppe Verdi to a French libretto by Camille du Locle and Joseph Méry, based on the dramatic play Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien by Friedrich Schiller. First performance: Opéra, Paris, 11 March 1867.Don Carlo is an opera in four or five acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian translation by Achille de Lauzières and Angelo Zanardini, the result of revisions made to the French work by Giuseppe Verdi during 1882-3. First performance (4 act version): Teatro alla Scala, Milan, 10 January 1884. The first act of Don Carlos (the Fontainebleau Scene), which was removed in the shortened 1884 version, was reinstated in a subsequent 1886 Italian version.//In the first half of the 20th century, Don Carlos/Don Carlo was rarely performed, but in the postwar period it became part of the standard operatic repertoire. There are a number of recordings, and it is regularly performed, particularly in the four act 'Milanese' version
