The Darkness are a English rock band touting themselves as classic hard rock. Their highly retro style of music seems to be influenced by 1970s rock bands like Queen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, T. Rex and Led Zeppelin, and 1980s rock bands such as Van Halen and Def Leppard. However, they are possibly the closest band to come to Queen's style since Freddie Mercury passed away, although this could be disputed by Queen fans. Lead singer Justin Hawkins' falsetto makes them immediately distinguishable from other present-day rock bands.//Originally from Lowestoft in Suffolk, brothers Justin Hawkins (Vocals and Guitar) and Dan Hawkins (Guitar) found themselves in London where they met up with childhood friends, Frankie Poullain (Bass) and Ed Graham (Drums), and thus The Darkness was born. Dan saw his brother's potential of being a frontman after Justin did an impressive recreation of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' at a Christmas party. Playing at first only in pubs, their catsuits, pyrotechnic guitar solos, and over the top performances and cocky attitudes soon brought them to the public knowledge. They have always insisted that they take their music seriously, despite opinion that the whole getup is a joke. The Darkness' first release was the "I Believe in a Thing Called Love (EP)" on August 12th 2002, which included early versions of 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love', 'Love on the Rocks With No Ice' and 'Love is Only a Feeling'. It finally sold out after three pressings and three chart entries, and is now so rare it can be bought on the internet for almost £200 [1].Achieving major success in the UK in 2003, The Darkness received considerable radio airplay of their singles, including "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and the Christmas hit "Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)". Their debut album, Permission to Land, went straight to number two in the UK charts upon its release on 7th July 2003, before going to number one and staying there for four weeks, eventually going on to sell one and a half million copies in the UK
