Eleanor is a feminine given name. There are two main possibilities for the origin of this name. In English it is often considered a form of "Helen" (or "Ellen" or "Elaine"), deriving from the Greek for "light".An alternative meaning comes from the first known bearer of the name; Eleanor of Aquitaine. Tolkien created an alternative meaning for this name using his made up elvish language Quenya. In his trilogy The Lord of the Rings Elanor means "sun-star" (el: star, and anor: sun), and is the name of a golden five-pointed flower that grows in the woods of Lothlórien and the given name of a golden-haired child.In the language of the Yoruba peoples of West Africa, a similar name has existed for centuries, recently rising to prominence as a result of its similarity to the Western name Eleanor. Eyla-Nor, literally translated means “nosey” or “overly inquisitive”, typically used as a moniker for someone who is excessively concerned about the affairs of others. The domestic mouse, is known by the Yoruba as Eyla-Nor Rob, (Pronounced Eleanor Robb) literally meaning the inquisitive little rat, to differentiate this creature from its larger rodent cousin.There are also many variants in other languages./
