San Diego Symphony was started in 1914 in San Diego. The Symphony performs over 100 concerts each season. In 2001 the Symphony performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Yes, and Charlotte Church. The winter pops series has performed with Dave Brubeck. Jahja Ling is the musical director.The San Diego Symphony performances include the Masterworks series; the Winter Pops series, as well as annual holiday programs; a Family Festival series; and the Light Bulb Series. From July through September, the Symphony presents an outdoor Summer Pops season on the waterfront.The rest of the year, the symphony performs in downtown's Copley Symphony Hall, built in 1929 as a French Rococo style luxury movie theater and conferred to the Symphony in 1984. Downtown's Symphony Towers with an AT&T logo at the top (the second tallest building in San Diego County) was built around Copley Hall in 1989.In 1983, San Diego Symphony’s then composer-in-residence, Bernard Rands, won the Pulitzer Prize. In 1998, the Symphony toured the west coast with Andrea Bocelli. On January 14, 2002, the San Diego Symphony announced the single largest donation ever made to a Symphony Orchestra; $120 million by Joan and Irwin Jacobs and was lauded by The New York Times as a result of this news
